Tips on Getting Testimonials for Your BookYou’ve decided to self-publish your book. But you don’t know how to go about getting those back cover blurbs you need. Here are some tips. First, make a list of the authors and other influential people you’d like to have quotes from. Make the list long to take into account those who won’t respond and don’t be afraid to go for the big guns; all they can say is no. Next, draft an email that includes a brief description of your book, your reason to contacting them, a deadline by which you need the blurb and a couple of examples of the type of comments you’re looking for (people are more apt to respond if you give them examples.) Lastly, ask how they want to receive the book; i.e. Word file, .pdf or book galley (you may have to print a few advance copies.) A few days before your deadline, follow-up with those you haven’t heard from and be sure to thank those who respond. Sending a final copy of your book is a nice thank you gift. 6 comments to Tips on Getting Testimonials for Your Book |

Hi Judith,
Good post! Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy (aka SARK) tells a great story of loving Maya Angelou’s books forever and then when she got to publish a book, she asked for Angelou to give an endorsement. Which Maya Angelou did even though SARK was an unknown writer. I think it helps if you can express what you enjoy about that writer’s work and why it would be meaningful to you if they endorsed your book.
Best,
Michele
