When I first started writing thirteen years ago, I was told that when I finished my manuscript, I should mail myself a copy and not open it. Here’s an interesting idea for novelists. Think of Rebecca in Dauphne DuMaurier’s novel. She never really appears but is a key part of the plot. Attention fiction writers! You need to grab your reader on the first page. When I read, I find myself skimming over lengthy description. That’s why I never liked reading Michener. Description is usually boring. So your Grade 4 teacher told you that you were really good at writing stories, and now twenty years later you’ve decided to become a writer. Check out my quick tips on editing fiction on L.M. Preston’s blog. If you have a minute, add your tips there or here. We writers all need to help each other! So you want to write a novel. What’s stopping you? |
