Hooking up on LinkedIn

I originally posted my profile on LinkedIn when I started my HR consulting practice years ago, mostly networking with past colleagues. But when I began writing, I expanded my contacts to include fellow authors and writing groups. I signed up for daily alerts and the other day I saw a post under “New Authors Need Marketing Ideas” that intrigued me. An author in Australia was announcing a new blog that will be hosted like a TV show, where you can see video commentary and written interviews from authors around the world. The post ended with an invitation to be interviewed. Since my husband and I will be traveling later this month to Sydney for our nephew’s wedding, I responded and a few emails later, I am scheduled for a face-to-face interview with novelist Sylvia Massara for her new Lit Chick Show to debut in October.

Networking takes time, but often the connections you make are well worth it.

Another Resource for Book Promotion

If you’re into book promotion, I strongly suggest you sign up for HARO (“Help a Reporter Out”), especially if you write non-fiction. This is a free service that links journalists with sources, and a great way to uncover interview opportunities. But you must be very thoughtful in responding to queries and tailor your response so that your message stands out to increase your chances of being selected for an interview. For tips on the right way to respond, go to one of my favorite resources, Build Buzz.
